Sustainability is the future and textile is in the centre of it, said designer Amit Aggarwal on the sidelines of Textiles India 2017, whose creations are worn by the likes of Kajol, Sonakshi Sinha, and Sonali Bendre.

He added: “It is the Textiles India show that inspires the country’s leading designers to communicate with the weavers and artisans and promote their skills to present garments that are relevant to modern times.”

First global B2B textiles event in India is Textiles India 2017, held from June 30-July 2. Textiles India wants to advertise the power of the value chain in India.

The huge subcontinent has a very diverse variety of weaves reflecting our culture, craft, and skills, said Aggarwal, while talking how important such shows are for the betterment of the fashion and crafts industry.

The Textiles India show is a significant event to revive and promote traditional Indian textiles by bringing them into mainstream fashion.

Two shows are curated and made by IMG Reliance Industries Ltd.

The first, Evolution of Textiles of India, aimed to demonstrate a compelling story of the textiles of India.

It presented the story of growth and development of the Indian textiles sector and its transformation to become a global power being the largest curated presentation of the Indian textiles on the runway.

The second show, Indian Handloom Show, aimed to present a story of the India Handloom brand initiative launched on National Handloom Day in 2015 by Modi.

This year, I was particularly proud to showcase our couture line as we have extended our sustainable design philosophies into it, said designer who showcased his collection on Friday.

This collection derived inspiration from several unusable, unclaimed pieces of heritage that seems to have lost their original meaning. Pre-owned Patola saris that we have sourced and refurbished will be in focus. The old textile is reinforced with man-made yarns and moulded into suitable runway designs; thus extending its lifespan, he added.

When asked how he will promote textiles with his collection, he answered: “I draw inspiration from our rich culture crafts and blend it into our eclectic present. I believe we exist in a world where product life cycle can be extended through responsible design ethics.”

Next question was if the consumers are ready for sustainable fashion

Designers have always known the significance of textiles. For the users, it’s more about the garment as a whole – the textile, colour, design, fit and feel.
With all said, today buyers are more aware of textiles, sustainable packaging and sustainability in general. The market is shifting towards classic styles as opposed to seasonal trends from fast-fashion.
