In late 2008 COIN was awarded funding from the Baring Foundation to undertake a joint Third Sector Initiative. The aim was to facilitate knowledge and generate new perspectives on how the non-environmental voluntary sector is affected by climate change – particularly fundamental aims and principles.
This project saw us carry out a programme of work with refugee and human rights NGOs. We worked with Asylum Aid, Refugee Council Refugee Action and Amnesty International (International Secretariat).
The broad aim was to:
-
assist organisations to assess the impact of climate change on their fundamental aims and principles,
-
train staff and beneficiaries of the charities involved to increase their knowledge of climate change and its impacts,
-
encourage carbon emission reduction action internally,
-
provide communication strategies and material on climate change to mobilise action amongst staff and supporters
Through the delivery of participatory workshops we have supported staff, senior management teams and trustees across these organisations to explore the refugee and human rights impacts of climate change. Three of the four partner organisations have committed to programmes of operational carbon reduction.
We have also developed four sector specific toolkits to support organisational learning and action on the issues. These can be downloaded from the resources and toolkits section tab on the left hand side of this page.
Though the Third Sector Initiative has formally come to a end, COIN will continue to support partners through implementation of changes in 2010. We are also keen to expand our work in the sector and hope to work with a least 10 more refugee and human rights sector organisations in 2010-11.
