Climate Change Adaptation
A new course helping councils to identify the risks and plans needed for climate adaptation.
‘An invaluable tool for all of us involved, and to help us communicate to others.’
Cllr. Tim Harman, Gloucestershire County Council
Who is the workshop for?
Typically the course is made available to managers across all service delivery areas. The content can be adapted to the local context, using sources from DEFRA and regional government offices and by collaborating with the council to identify immediate, relevant examples.
What happens in the workshop?
The session begins with video clips featuring climate experts and a fast moving slideshow. This establishes a common understanding of the fundamentals of climate change causes and impacts. Participants then split up in groups for exercises and discussions exploring the predicted impacts in the local area.
The initial learning on climate impacts and mitigation plans is used as a basis for developing an adaptation decision making tool. This is then applied to practical issues of direct local relevance. The day concludes with a discussion on strategies for ensuring that action spans the council as a whole.
Course development was originally commissioned by Gloucestershire County Council:
‘The 7 Gloucestershire Councils and the Primary Care Trust are embarking on an ambitious climate change adaptation programme. We got off to the best start possible by using COIN who understood exactly what we needed, developed an exciting workshop and delivered it in a way that energized participants, meeting our needs perfectly’
– Nigel Riglar, Environment Director, Gloucestershire County Council
