COIN is holding a Forum on climate change for refugees and migrants on Monday 19th October in partnership with Migrants Rights Network, Praxis, Refugee Action, Refugee Council, Latitude Care Network and Doctors of the World.  The forum will be the first of its kind and will provide a space for refugees and migrants in the UK to come together to talk about climate change. The event will include presentations by expert scientists, Q&A and discussion workshops aimed at exploring the issues.

New toolkits for the Refugee and Migrant sector

We have published with the support of the Baring Foundation 3 toolkits to support our work with the refugee and migrant sector on climate change.  These focus on issues of forced migration, the challenges of climate change to refugee organisations as well as offer a practical guide for reducing your office carbon footprint.

Climate Change and Action Course for Refugees and Migrants

Wednesday 16 December 2009, 2:00pm - 5:00pm in London

Building on the success of the first refugee and migrant forum in October, COIN is offering free training for refugees and migrants on Climate Change and Action this December. At the October meeting, attendees voted for the forum to pursue long-term advocacy, lobbying and awareness-raising activities in relation to climate change. The 3-hour Climate Change and Action training session will provide the next step forward in building a powerful, collective voice on the issue. The first half of the session aims to build confidence and understanding when talking about climate change. The second half will look at aims and strategy development as a forum.

Refugee Roundtable

Friday 29 January 2010 in London

COIN and Jean Lambert MEP will be co-hosting the 6th Refugee Roundtable on Friday, the 11th of September 2009. A two hour discussion forum for professionals from the refugee, human rights, environmental and climate
change sectors.  The group's aim is to build a progressive and representative discourse on forced migration and climate change issues. To our knowledge we are the only forum of this kind in Europe. Meetings are held
every two months and are by invitation only. If you would like more background on the roundtable please visit the refugee section of this website or  if you are keen to get involved email Hannah on hannah@coinet.org.uk to find out more.

Refugee and Migrant Forum Update

On 19 October, participants from Africa, Asia and Latin America came together for the first ever UK Refugee and Migrant Climate Change Forum, held at the Amnesty Action Centre in London.  The event was opened by Grace Adok of Latitude Care Network who called a minute’s silence for all those suffering climate change impacts across the globe.  Scientist presentations were then given on climate change impacts on migration as well as the possibilities for adaptation.  Participants brainstormed ideas about the kinds of action they’d like to take including lobbying, advocacy and awareness-raising.  Further activities and meetings will be arranged to take these ideas forward. If you’re a refugee or migrant and would like to get involved in the Forum, please contact Hannah Smith, hannah@coinet.org.uk.

Refugee and Migrant Climate Change Forum

The Refugee and Migrant Forum provides a space for refugees and migrants in the UK to come together to talk about climate change.  We held our first Forum event in October 2009 where participants voted for the Forum to pursue long-term advocacy, lobbying and awareness-raising activities in relation to climate change.

Building on the success of our October event, COIN offered free training for refugees and migrants on Climate Change and Action in January 2010. The 3-hour session covered basic climate change information, strategies for change and aimed to build the confidence of participants to talk about climate change issues.

Since the training in January we are lucky to have secured the help of refugee and migrant forum participant, Ayian Sigal. Ayian will be working with COIN for two months to develop strategy and identify opportunities for collaboration among the refugee and migrant community on climate change.

Climate Change and Migration

A number of experts and international organisations now warn that climate change has the potential to displace millions. Whilst so there remains wide-ranging debate about the actual consequences of climate change for migration. Whom does this affect and how should we respond?

COIN has developed a 3-hour workshop aimed at enabling these issues to be debated and discussed in group sessions.

Who is the workshop for?

Suitable for NGOs and community organisations across the refugee, human rights, development and environmental sectors training can be tailored for volunteers, staff, senior management teams and trustees.

Length: Either 90 or 180 minutes (depending on requirements of the organisation or group)
